Nature awakes: peach tree blossoms in spring © European Union, 2014 — Photographer: Peter Baerbel

We are living through difficult times.

And such times call for extraordinary efforts by all of us.

We are all making a difference either by staying at home, or by fighting on the front line like our health care workers, or by doing small acts of kindness.

Many people are confined in their homes and therefore, I wanted to read out a little poem for all of us to remind us that nature continues and that spring is about to come and that we will see spring.

Eric Mamer, 17 March 2020

Our Chief Spokesperson Eric Mamer and some of his team members recited verses by great poets, after replying to questions from journalists during our daily online briefing.

Printemps — Victor Hugo

Voici donc les longs jours, lumière, amour, délire !
Voici le printemps ! mars, avril au doux sourire,
Mai fleuri, juin brûlant, tous les beaux mois amis !
Les peupliers, au bord des fleuves endormis,
Se courbent mollement comme de grandes palmes ;
L’oiseau palpite au fond des bois tièdes et calmes ;
Il semble que tout rit, et que les arbres verts
Sont joyeux d’être ensemble et se disent des vers.
Le jour naît couronné d’une aube fraîche et tendre ;
Le soir est plein d’amour ; la nuit, on croit entendre,
A travers l’ombre immense et sous le ciel béni,
Quelque chose d’heureux chanter dans l’infini.

Victor Hugo

Hope is the thing with feathers — Emily Dickinson

‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers —
That perches in the soul —
And sings the tune without the words —
And never stops — at all —

And sweetest — in the Gale — is heard —
And sore must be the storm —
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm —

I’ve heard it in the chillest land —
And on the strangest Sea —
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb — of Me.

Emily Dickinson

Caminante — Antonio Machado

Caminante, son tus huellas
el camino y nada más;
Caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace el camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino
sino estelas en la mar.

Antonio Machado

Se io avessi una botteguccia
fatta di una sola stanza
vorrei mettermi a vendere
sai cosa? La speranza.

“Speranza a buon mercato!”
Per un soldo ne darei
ad un solo cliente
quanto basta per sei.

E alla povera gente
che non ha da campare
darei tutta la mia speranza
senza fargliela pagare.

Gianni Rodari
